Driving license
Would you like to renew your driving licence or add categories? You can do this quickly and easily online via the RDW. If you are applying for a driving licence for the first time, you must make an appointment at the Huis voor de Stad.
Renewing online via the RDW
When renewing online, you handle the application yourself. You only need to visit the Huis voor de Stad to collect your driving licence. Online renewal consists of 4 steps.
Step 1: Check the conditions
You can only renew your driving licence online if you meet the following conditions:
- You want to renew your driving licence or add one or more categories.
- Your current driving licence was issued after 1 October 2006.
- You have the DigiD app with ID check, or you log in using your identity card or driving licence.
- You have a Certificate of Fitness from the CBR, if required.
Are you applying for a driving licence for the first time? Has your driving licence been lost or stolen? Or do you need an urgent application? Then you cannot apply online.
Step 2: Have a passport photo taken
You must have your passport photo taken by an RDW-certified photographer or photo booth. They will send your photo and signature to the RDW securely and digitally. Within a few minutes, you will receive an email from the RDW confirming whether your photo has been approved and whether you can renew your driving licence online.
The photographer will need your driving licence number to send the photo. Make sure you bring your driving licence or at least your driving licence number. Read here more about the requirements

A driving licence is valid for 10 years. In some cases (depending on your age and health), the validity period may be shorter. A driving licence with category C, C1, D, D1 and/or E is valid for 5 years.
Are you older than 65? Then your driving licence is valid for a shorter period. Read more about your driving licence from age 65 onwards on CBR.nl.
The start date of your new driving licence is the date on which you apply for it.
Do you have a foreign driving licence and live in the Netherlands? In most cases, you may temporarily drive in the Netherlands with your foreign licence. After that, you must exchange your driving licence via the municipality. Read here whether and how you can exchange your foreign driving licence. Are you eligible? Then make an appointment to exchange your foreign driving licence.
