Taxes, remission

If your income is too low to pay taxes, you can apply for a tax remission. This request means you may not have to pay certain municipal and water board taxes. We consider not only your income but also the balance of your accounts and the value of your assets, such as a car or owned home.

If you receive full remission every year, you may qualify for automated remission testing. You need to authorize the municipality to retrieve your information from various agencies to determine eligibility. You will receive the outcome with your tax notice.

Sometimes, the municipality cannot automatically determine eligibility. However, you can still apply for remission by completing the application form and providing the necessary documents. You cannot appeal against a denial of automated remission.

Conditions for Remission

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Your financial assets like bank and savings accounts.
  • Ownership of a property with significant equity.
  • Possession of a vehicle or motorized vehicle valued over €3,350.

The Municipality of Helmond offers an additional asset exemption beyond the statutory threshold:

  • Couples or married: €2,000
  • Single parent: €1,800
  • Single person: €1,500

If you were born before 1-1-1935, you could have an additional €3,350 in your bank accounts.

Income Assessment:

  • We consider your earnings from employment, benefits, or pensions.
  • These are assessed against standard exemption amounts per household type.
  • We calculate your payment capacity by deducting certain fixed expenses, like housing costs, from your income.

Other Qualifications:

  • You may apply for remission for sewerage charges, property tax (on owned residences), and waste collection fees.
  • Remission is only possible for charges unpaid no longer than three months past their due date. If you apply after the payment period has expired and have not yet paid the municipal tax bill, please note that you cannot receive remission for any collection costs incurred, which must be paid in full before considering your remission application.
